In a tight race at Angus Glen Golf Course, the Queen’s Gaels men’s team and the Toronto Varsity Blues women’s team have taken the slimmest of leads as the first day of competition came to a close at the 2009 OUA golf championships, presented by mikeweir.com.
After a slight delay due to frost, the golfers finally teed off on the storied Angus Glen south course.
Blues veteran Scott Samuel and Mustangs Charles Fitzsimmons (Toronto) went shot-for-shot and put on a beautiful golfing exhibition. Playing in the same group, Samuel (Etobicoke, Ont.) shot four under par (68) for the clubhouse lead after day one, while his Western counterpart shot two under par (70) and sits in sole possession of second place. Laurier’s Matthew Farronato (Hamilton, Ont.) is one back of Fitzsimmons at 71.
On the women’s side, Waterloo Warriors all-star Tiffany Terrier (Kingston, Jamaica) leads the way, shooting a solid round of 77. Lisa Boyko (Mississauga, Ont.) from the University of Western Ontario sits in second place with 79, while U of T’s first-year standout Laura Upenieks (Toronto) is three back of the lead, finishing the day at 80.
Upenieks’ opening round has helped the Blues women’s team to the top of the leader board with a great opening score of 252 however, the OUA’s most consistent team throughout the regular season, the undefeated Queen’s Gaels, isn't far behind with a team total of 253. The Western Mustangs are within striking distance as they sit in third place with a total of 261.
Seven points separate the four top teams in the men’s draw. Queen’s has taken the early lead with a team total of 295. Waterloo is four points behind and in second place, while the University of Ottawa and Western sit in a tie for third with a total of 302. The defending OUA champions, University of Toronto, are currently tied for sixth (305).
