The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s and women’s squash teams opened their 2009-10 pre-season this past week.
The Blues men’s team played an exhibition match against the Jesters Club that resulted in an 8-8 draw. The Jesters are team comprised of Blues alumni and past OUA graduates who continue to support university and junior squash.
Adrian Pond, playing in the number one position, had an encouraging start to the new season, while rookie Brett Sagert also made an impressive debut.
Toronto’s women’s team began their Toronto and District Women’s Squash Association (TDWSA) season with two convincing wins. U of T’s B division team defeated the Fitness Institute, 4-1, as Megan Northey made her first start in the number one position and took the match in five games. Cami Marmoush, Shuhsien Zhu and Rebeca Tristan Aldave also notched their first victories of the season.
The Blues D team also had an impressive day, sweeping the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC) 5-0. This was particularly encouraging as the team included four rookies. Jazeen Hollings, Helena Whyte, Karen Ho and Satinder Sangherea all made their Toronto debuts with second-year Elizabeth Cambridge rounding out the win.
The Varsity Blues women’s team returns to action next week as the Blues D team hosts the Fabulous Fitness on Thursday, October 22, while the B team will play at the Badminton and Racquet club on Tuesday, October 20.
On Saturday Oct. 24th, the men will be hosting the inaugural Black Knight men’s team tournament against the Queen’s Gaels and the Jesters Club at the Athletic Centre squash courts. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
